In 793, Viking raiders have reached England, massacring the monastery at Lindisfarne and devastating the Northumbrian coast. Brother Aidan, one of the lone survivors, has retreated to a troubled, isolated village on the Fleamburg headland in shame and self-exile, never thinking to hear the Danish tongue again.

When a mysterious Norsewoman washes ashore, Aidan is able to understand her, and he realizes that Sigrid has no memory of her past life on the Viking ships. He pleads on her behalf for mercy, seeing her as a path to redemption for his cowardice in abandoning his brothers.

Sigrid’s life is spared, and begrudgingly, she merges into Anglo-Saxon culture with Aidan as her unlikely ally. In time, she discovers the root of the dark curse tormenting the village and the people she has come to love. Together, the two scarred survivors fight to break the curse and overcome the past they have both struggled to escape.

Just as they claim victory, Viking sails appear on the horizon, returning to raid and reclaim what they left behind. Sigrid is suddenly faced with her most difficult challenge yet as she is forced to confront the shocking realization of who she once was.
